Acrylic on Canvas - 18” x 24”

This acrylic painting of an exotic insect was a commission. The request was for a piece of art of an exotically patterned beetle to fill the canvas, and sit on a green velvet background. I had the perfect selection of reference material from when I visited the Montreal Insectarium.

The challenge with this piece was in making sure the black legs would show up nicely on the requested dark green velvet background. I worked with applying light areas on the velvet and accentuating the highlights on the legs.

Nature is an amazing designer, and I enjoyed recreating the extraordinary black and white beetle. I echoed in the intricate patterning on the painted-on frame at the top right and lower left corners of the canvas.
