Dragonflies for Lucy
Acrylic on canvas - 18” x 24”
My granddaughter Lucy's room was to have a scientific flavor, and so I was excited to come up with a piece of art to suit the theme. All the grands get their own painting, and Lucy was to be no exception. We contemplated several ideas but ultimately decided to go with a painting resembling an illustration from an old scientific journal. We chose dragonflies as the specimen.
I gave the background a mottled texture as a nod to antique paper, painted three views of the dragonfly, and added a scientific legend with text naming the insect's parts. The painted-on green frame with vines adds a bit of warmth to the piece. Dragonflies for Lucy was one of my favorite pieces to create.
