Fire Ice

Bold colored abstract acrylic painting

Acrylic on Canvas Cloth - 11” x 17”

Fire Ice is an abstract acrylic painting created over the course of several other painting projects. I enjoy keeping a piece like this going. When I have leftover paint on my brush or on a palette that is going to dry, I try to use it up. I’ll apply it to a block of wood, a dish towel, the wall. Recently, I had a swath of unstretched canvas, so I used that for my leftovers. I started with some arbitrary strokes, but eventually, after a number of these applications, the piece found its own calling, and the strokes became more on purpose.

When I completed this colorful piece of artwork, I sat back and thought how it looked like ice on fire. Of course, the next thought was Fire Ice. I thought about how the colors and shapes feel like expressions of strong emotions. Those are the emotions I have when I think about our immigration policies under the current administration, and the emotions that must arise for those suffering at the hands of ICE. Thus, the name became Fire Ice.
