Fourth of July Lilies
Acrylic on canvas - 36” x 24”
People often mistake these spider lilies for Cahaba lilies. They are very similar, but not the same. The spider lilies in this acrylic floral painting came from my backyard and bloom during both the rainy season and a drought. Cahaba lilies are semi-aquatic and would not survive in my often dry and neglected beds.
They usually bloom as July approaches, and by the fourth, they are in full swing. They remind me of fireworks, which historically I have always loved. It's like I get to have fireworks without the fire!
I rendered them amongst the deep green blades that always precede their appearance, and included the rich texture of the fence behind.
