Going Stag

Acrylic on canvas board - 9” x 12”

I photographed this amazing staghorn beetle specimen at the Montreal Insectarium. I found the soothing yellow tone of his wings to be extraordinarily beautiful, especially given the striking contrast to the black thorax, limbs, and pincers.

I decided to give the arachnid painting a turquoise background, finding the yellow and black looked lovely against this blue-green color. This stunning color combination, which I find soothing, provides an interesting contrast to the fearsome imagery of the insect.
