Three Tulips in Jar
Acrylic on canvas - 18” x 24”
A co-worker set three tulips in a jar at her workstation. The arrangement caught my eye as I was fetching coffee from the office kitchen. Sitting in the sun, the light passing through tinted glass made interesting patterns. The rich pinks of the tulips provided a soothing bit of beauty amidst the drab grays of office cubicles. It struck me that this enchanting tableau gave evidence of the human desire for beauty and aliveness even in the most lifeless surroundings. It gave a lift to my morning. I snapped a few photos and returned to my work.
Once in the studio, I chose to liven up the colors provided by our office furniture and use a more pleasing yellow for the floral backdrop. This color choice, the direct contrast color to purple, created an interesting interaction with the glass jar and a warm embrace for three tulips, the stars of this composition.
